Frequently Asked Questions About Crystals

People have a lot of questions about crystals, and we’re happy to share their enthusiasm! We are here to help you find the right gemstone for your needs. Here are some of the most common questions we hear from our customers about the stones we carry.

What are crystals?
Crystals are solid materials formed beneath the earth composed of atoms in orderly repeating patterns. They acquire unique vibrational energies from years of mineral formation. Many ancient cultures — including ones in India, Egypt, Greece, and China — believed that crystals have healing properties. Some people claim that crystals promote the flow of good energy and help rid your body and mind of negative energy for physical and emotional benefits.

What’s the difference between crystals, minerals, rocks, and gems?
Mineral is a solid made by the natural activities of the Earth composed of elements in a regular, specific pattern. A crystal is formed when blocks of minerals are stacked on top of another in a repeating pattern forming a three dimensional object with flat faces. On the other hand, rock is a solid made of different mineral grains in no particular pattern. Lastly, a gem is a mineral or stone that has been cut, ground, and polished to a specific shape to enhance their beauty.

How do crystals work?
Crystals have high vibrational energies that can work with the body’s own energy field. The high vibrations of the crystal can dial up your own energy field or it can cleanse your aura from blockages bringing your chakras in alignment.

What are the benefits of crystals?
Crystals are pretty, mystical, and they capture the imagination. They just might be one of the most popular trends in alternative medicine. It’s believed by some that holding crystals or positioning them on various areas of the body can give physical and mental benefits. The idea is that crystals interact with the body’s energy field, creating balance and alignment. Many people use crystals for stress and focus, while others believe that crystals have the power to heal physical ailments and illnesses. The proposed benefits of crystals predominantly surround areas of mental wellbeing, increased tranquility, positivity and focus, as well as enhanced immunity. Individual crystals are also known to have their own special energies that can align to different areas of life, with their shape and colour – as well as their type – affecting their influence.

What is History Crystals?
Crystals are a group of minerals. Very simply, they’re beautiful, semi-rare stones — some are clear and some have bright colors.

In Egypt, Polack notes that multiple stones were used for medicinal and ritual purposes, including:

  • lapis lazuli
  • turquoise
  • carnelian
  • emerald
  • quartz

It is said that Leonardo da Vinci reportedly kept a gemstone on his desk, claiming, “Amethyst dispels evil thoughts and speeds up thinking.” “Crystals absorb energy from pressure and movement and convert it into an electronic frequency”. “It’s this frequency, unique to each type of crystal, that users are relying on when working with crystals, and given that many pain and anxiety relief devices work on similar principles, we do believe they can help in these areas.”

“Crystals have potent healing powers, and when we touch them, healing is immediately activated”.

As the crystal vibrations interact with the body’s natural energetic frequency, the body is said to be left feeling focused, relaxed, and clear.

The Science: How Crystals Affect Us.
Science has proven that matter is 99.999999999999% empty space. And what makes up this empty space: energy. Energy is everything, and everything is energy. You, the chair you’re sitting on, the phone you’re holding, and the crystals you know and love – all of it is vibrating energy.

“Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. This is not philosophy. This is physics.”
-Albert Einstein

Just like everything else in the universe, we each have our own unique vibrational frequency. People with higher vibrations radiate kindness, love, peace, and compassion, whereas people with lower vibrations experience more low-vibe emotions like jealousy, anxiety, anger, or fear.

Whatever frequency you’re at, as a human, your vibration is very unstable and very easily influenced. It changes constantly as we’re exposed to other people, social media, the news, traffic, the weather, good news, bad news, our own memories, etc.

Crystals, on the other hand, have a super stable energy frequency that doesn’t change. Why? They’re made up of a fixed, regularly repeating, perfect geometric pattern of molecules. And they maintain their perfect stability with no effort. Exactly the opposite of our constantly changing, non-stable human nature.

So why does the stability of a crystal matter? Well, more stable energy = more powerful energy. And powerful energy can influence the energies around it.  This is why crystals can so profoundly influence our unstable (less powerful) energy.

Do I need to energised the crystal before I use them?
Energising their crystal gives them the power they need to change your energy. The best time to energise your crystal is after cleansing them.

How to care for your crystal?
When you first bring your crystal home, experts say you’ll want to cleanse away any negativity it may have picked up. (If you have bought our regular crystal instead of energised one?)

Depending on the kind of stone, you can:

  • hold it under cold, running water
  • immerse it in sea salt
  • lace it in sunlight or moonlight
  • smudge your crystal with sage or other herbs

When should I cleanse my crystals?
We suggest to cleanse a new crystal before you use them, to remove residual energy from its first source. It is good practice cleanse your crystals religiously, at least once a month, especially if you’re doing heavy healing to restore their energy.

How do I cleanse crystals?
Moon bath: Line up your crystals where the moon light’s hit them. Use the full moon to release energy and the new moon to absorb energy growth.

  • Eclipse: Clear stagnant energy with lunar and solar eclipse to recharge with a whole new energy. Line them up your window where the light will hit them. Make sure that crystals charged under solar eclipse aren’t light sensitive.
  • Salt water: This method helps rid the crystal of unwanted energy. Leave the crystal in salt water overnight but make sure they’re safe under salt water first!
  • Smudging: Sage is the most popular herb to use and works perfectly for purification. When smudging your crystals, do it outdoors to ensure that negative energy diffuse somewhere else.
  • Burial: Burying your crystal under the soil re-grounds and drives negative energy away. Leave them for 24 hours and for not more than three days under the soil.

So I just bought a crystal. Now what do I do with it?
There are so many things you can do with crystals! You can carry one in your pocket, or several in a small pouch. When the purpose of the crystal has to do with your everyday life, this is often a good bet.

Here are some of our other favorite uses for crystals:
Wear it as a pendant – you can wire wrap your stone.

  • Keep some on your desk at home or the office for inspiration and focus.
  • Keep your crystals close while you sleep on your bedside table or under your pillow. This is a good choice if you want the crystal to work through your subconscious or dreams, to promote lucid dreaming, or simply to calm bad dreams and promote restful sleep. Choose a crystal that corresponds to the goal you have in mind – high-vibe stones like Labradorite and Lapis Lazuli are recommended for those exploring lucid dreaming, whereas Howlite and Amethyst may be better for restful sleep.
  • Place protective stones on your windowsills or elsewhere in your home to banish negative energy and keep you feeling at peace in your sacred space.

If you have a collection of stones and a set goal in mind, try creating a crystal grid! You can contact us to know much more about them for Creating Your Own Crystal Grids.

Remember, the possibilities are endless – and there is no book of rules for working with your stones! Experiment and see for yourself what resonates.

What is the difference between rough and tumbled stones?
Which is better: a rough crystal, or one that’s been polished? We hear that question all the time at NeVish. Some say the form of the stone makes no difference. In our experience, though, crystal energy exists in rough, cut and tumbled stones – but the more natural the form, the more direct the transmission of that energy.

Most people we’ve consulted tend to feel more raw power coming from rough stones. But in some circumstances, softer energy is more appropriate. And sometimes other considerations (such as toxicity) make tumbled stones the better choice as a buffer between the raw nature of the stone and the practical realities of human needs.

Obviously, there’s not total agreement on this topic, and there likely never will be. But we typically advise professional crystal healers to have both rough and tumbled stones in their toolkit. The rest of us can usually be confident in following our intuition.

If, like many people, you feel stronger energy coming from rough stones, you’ll want to take that into consideration when choosing your crystals. But that doesn’t mean rough is always better. If safety, aesthetics, and/or desire for a softer energy lead you to tumbled stones, that’s the right choice for your circumstances.

Does size matter?
It’s not the most important thing, but yes, sometimes size makes a difference. After all, symbolism is part of magic, and every stone is unique. Size is one characteristic of the individual stone that contributes to its certain symbolic meaning.

So even though black tourmaline of any size helps protect your home, a pebble in the corner may tend to be forgotten, whereas a substantial chunk next to the front door will act as a daily visual reminder to stave off negative vibes!

What about different shapes?
Shapes can make a difference too! Here are some common ones and their uses:

  • Wands are especially good for directing energy.
  • Rounded stones help with comfort and healing.
  • A pocket, palm or worry stone is great to carry with you as a daily reminder of your intentions and goals.
  • Generators (also known as towers or points) and pyramids pull in energy.
  • A Merkaba connects you with the spiritual realm, including angels and guides.
  • Seer stones are designed for scrying, helping you “see” with your intuition.
  • Heart carvings symbolize love (in all its forms – platonic, familial, romantic, and even self-love.)
  • Eggs are associated with fertility, renewal, and new beginnings.

How does Crystals and Chakras are connected?
Every crystal, just like every human, has a different energetic frequency. It depends on a few different factors like the size, the composition, and most helpfully, the color.

Why does crystal color matter?
The colors we see are specific light frequencies. Red, for example, has a much lower frequency than purple. The same goes for our own bodies. If you look at a chakra diagram, the lowest chakra (the root chakra) is shown in red, which aligns with the low vibrational frequency of that chakra. Your crown chakra, on the other hand, is shown in purple, as it’s the highest vibration chakra, and the highest vibration color.

Which Crystals Align with Each Chakra?
Chakras are the seven energetic centers in the body. They’re each connected with different organs and functions in our mind, body, and spirit. The lowest chakra  (the root chakra), has the lowest vibrational frequency – and its qualities mirror this. It’s concerned with the basic elements of existence – primarily with your safety and physical survival. As you move up the chakra system, you move from the more fundamental emotions to the deeper, higher vibration feelings of joy, love, and creativity.

Your chakras can become imbalanced based on influences/experiences in our lives. These imbalances may show up as a physical symptom, emotional disruption, or mental ailment.

This is where crystals come in – they can help rebalance any misalignment – returning your energetic centers to the frequencies they’re meant to vibrate at. Keep reading for our ethically-sourced crystal recommendations for each chakra.

  • Root Chakra (red) – connection with the earth, your physical survival, and safety.
  • Root Chakra Crystals: Smokey Quartz and Tourmaline. Smokey Quartz helps us feel grounded in our physical body and connected to the earth. Its helps release and neutralize negative energy. Tourmaline helps you feel safe, grounded, and secure in your place on this earth.
  • Sacral Chakra (orange) – the creative life force energy that makes you human.
  • Sacral Chakra Crystal: Citrine magnifies our manifestations and helps reconnect us with our divine feminine energy – the center of our emotions, sexual energy, and sacred creativity.
  • Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow) – the seat of your personal power – the internal wisdom and confidence within you.
  • Solar Plexus Chakra Crystal: Citrine is known as the Success Stone for good reason – it clears out self-doubt and brings forth feelings of confidence and personal power.
  • Heart Chakra (green) – love and compassion for yourself and others.
  • Heart Chakra Crystals: Rose Quartz and Fluorite. Rose quartz helps awaken love and compassion for ourselves and for others. Green Fluorite is energetically matched to the heart chakra and helps to clear any blockages or imbalances.
  • Throat Chakra (blue) – this chakra allows us to speak our truth with clarity, love, and kindness.
  • Throat Chakra Crystal: Opalite brings ease to your interactions and helps enhance your self-expression.
  • Third Eye Chakra (indigo) – your connection to your intuition and information beyond the material world.
  • Third Eye Crystal – Herkimer Diamond and Lepidolite. The Herkimer Diamond is an incredibly high-vibe stone that helps open our awareness to the wisdom of consciousness. When our Third Eye is open, we see clearly and understand easily. Known as The Peace Stone, Lepidolite helps stabilize internal strife and connect us to our calm, all-knowing intuition.
  • Crown Chakra (violet) – connection to consciousness, all that is.
  • Crown Chakra Crystals: Amethyst and Clear Quartz. Amethyst helps connect us with infinite consciousness – the pure white light and all-knowing wisdom that’s always available to us. Clear Quartz helps open the Crown Chakra and align you with your highest self.

How to select your crystal?
First things first: Identify what you feel you’re missing before looking into what the stones can provide you. This will help you determine what’s happening within yourself before depending on outside sources. From there, just let your intuition choose what’s best for you. Whether a crystal catches your eye or you feel a pull toward one, your inner subconscious can help guide you to the crystal that’s right for you. Once it’s picked out, you can create the connection you need. Still, I f you are not sure about which one to pick you can always connect with us and we will be glad to help you for the same.

Are the crystals at NeVish natural or manmade?
Almost all of our stones are natural, but a few are either manmade or need human help to achieve the forms you see in the store.

Some choose not to work with stones that have been created or modified by humans, while others value the various added properties that these treatments can bestow. For example, it can be very difficult to come by a material like Titanium on its own, but as part of an Aura Quartz it’s more readily accessible.

We’ll always be up front with you about what our items are made of! We do not market items as naturally occurring unless we know for a fact that they are, and we clearly designate anything that has been artificially treated as such.

Our advice is to give working with any material that you feel drawn to a try – you never know what could happen! And even if you don’t feel compatible with a stone energetically, there’s nothing wrong with keeping some items in your collection just because they are pretty to look at.

Are your crystals ethically sourced?
All our crystals are ethically sourced. We at NeVish Crystals pride ourselves in buying directly from legitimate suppliers and manufacturers. This way we completely understand the process they took in acquiring their crystals and stores.

Where do all these crystals come from?
We buy from many different sources: gem shows, general distributors, specialized crystal warehouses, out-of-the-way rock shops, and dealers we cross paths with.

Are your crystals genuine?
All our crystals and crystal products are genuine. We take great importance in providing genuine crystals to give you the healing and energy you need. We try to provide as much information to our crystals but feel free to contact us if you have any queries.
